Vitiligo is a condition where the skin loses its pigment cells (melanocytes), resulting in discoloured patches. It can affect any area of the body and may also affect the hair and inside of the mouth. The extent and rate of colour loss is unpredictable.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes rapid skin cell turnover, leading to thick, scaly, silvery patches on the skin. It commonly affects the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back, but can appear anywhere on the body.

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) causes dry, itchy, inflamed skin. It is common in children but can occur at any age. The condition tends to flare periodically and may be accompanied by asthma or hay fever.

Fungal skin infections are caused by various types of fungi and are extremely common, especially in hot and humid climates. They include ringworm (tinea), candidiasis, and pityriasis versicolor.

Urticaria presents as raised, itchy welts (hives) on the skin. It can be acute (lasting less than 6 weeks) or chronic. Prof. Dr. Usha Gupta authored the chapter on urticaria in the IADVL undergraduate textbook.

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition affecting skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes. It typically presents as purplish, flat-topped bumps that are often itchy.

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It can range from mild (blackheads, whiteheads) to severe (cystic acne) and may leave scars if not treated properly.

Melasma causes dark, discoloured patches on the skin, typically on the face. It is more common in women and those with darker skin tones. Sun exposure and hormonal changes are major triggers.

Hair loss can present as gradual thinning, patchy bald spots, or sudden loosening of hair. It can affect the scalp or the entire body and may be temporary or permanent, depending on the cause.

Premature greying refers to the loss of hair colour before the age of 25 in Asians. While genetics play a major role, nutritional deficiencies and certain medical conditions can contribute.

Dandruff is a common condition marked by flaking skin on the scalp. Seborrheic dermatitis is a more severe form that can also affect the face and chest.
